A pretty good book with some curious shortcomings

Curious because on one level it's so good but when it comes to the details it's a real pain.

I'm a beginner programmer and picked up this book to see how a complete system is put together. I am also reading a primer on C# programmming Pro [...] 4 in C# 2010, Fourth Edition. I'm learning a lot from this book for two reasons,

1. It's a complex project that utilizes apparently good design principles (I'm really not qualified to say that... but it seems good).
2. I'm learning a lot as I debug the code offered in this book... and that's the rub.

As the code stands, both in the book and the source code, you will not have a working application. You better have a good [...]/C# reference handy and be willing to take the time to understand why things aren't working.

As an example, in the PayPal chapter the authors have left out a critical pair of quotes that make their link to view the shopping cart not work. After putting in the quotes and finding that it still didn't work I realized that they also neglected to include a DataBind command in the page_load that is necessary to make the statement work. Now it works. I then went to their source code and found that there they had hacked around the problem. The erroneous statement is still in the code but they've put a band-aid on it.

So I have a lot of sympathy for the negative reviews seen here. What's up with the technical reviewer? Either he didn't try the code before the book was published or the code was changed after his review.

I have submitted errata but nothing has shown up on the book home page.

I can't understand the people giving 5-star reviews and not mentioning any of this. Did I get a different printing of the book?

I'm half way through the book and still plugging away, it's actually a good learning experience, just not the one that I expected.
